Site of the week (or SOTW) is a new, regular feature I will be posting. It will contain a review of the site and, such as in the case of this week’s site, tutorial on how to use the site. Please let me know what you think of these posts and also please suggest future sites. Let’s begin!
Music-Map.com is a site I’ve recently discovered created by Marek Gibney from Germany. It is a way for people to find new artists which are related in some way to those they already listen to.
When you enter the site, you are asked to input an artist’s name. You are then provided with a list of artists that have been flagged relevant to your search by other users of the site. The results are displayed in the form of a web with your search parameter in the center. The distance from the center determines how many other people have said they listen to that artist as well.
For example, if I search for Foo Fighters I can see that people who listen to the Foo Fighters also listen to Fastball, Silverchair, Everclear, Johnny Cash and more. More people who listen to the Foo Fighters also listen to Everclear than they do Fastball. If you click on any of the artists displayed you are directed to their music map.
This site makes it very easy to see what music tastes are like around the world. For example, did you know that people who listen to Rob Zombie also listen to Celine Dion, Tenacious D and Adam Sandler.
Be forewarned before you use the Music-Map that it does use quite a bit of system resources to provide it’s dynamic layout. If you would like to contribute to the project, you can do so by going to Gnoosic.com.
It is definitely worth checking out if you’re a music buff or just looking to expand your musical horizon.
