My parents moved just outside of Sarnia in January and that’s where I spend one weekend a month (namely this weekend). Along with the house came a riding lawn mover , an MTD Yard Machine which I’ve dubbed “Major T. Deherbivator.”

(From MTDs site, unfortunately ours isn’t red)
With the recent warm weather we’ve been having the grass has once again turned green and that can only mean one thing: it’s growing. It was time to take the Major out for a test drive to make sure the winter hadn’t played any tricks with its systems. After dusting him off and thoroughly reading the manual (this IS the first riding mower we’ve had a chance to use), the Major was ready to go.
As I positioned myself at the helm, I couldn’t help but think of the scene in 1998′s The Waterboy where Vicki Vallencourt, Adam Sandler’s on screen romantic interest, soops up his riding lawn mower (1:43 in the video below).
Pushing dreams of flying down the main street on the Major out of the way I went through the pre-start checklist:
- Brake on and locked in parking position: CHECK
- Gear shift: NEUTRAL
- Throttle: RABBIT, I mean, FAST
- Blade: OFF
And then I turned the key. Major T Deherbivator’s engine sputtered then stopped. “Come on, soldier! Get your act together!” I gritted through my teeth as the key once more found its way to the start position. “Rutt-tut-tut-tut-tut-tut-rutt” the Major replied as if to say “Sir! Yes, sir!” He was alive and well and it was time for a march. I thrust the gear shifter to forward, released the brake and hit the gas.
Major Deherbivator moved across the lawn carrying me as a steed would his rider. He is ready. After the short trip around the backyard to the cheers of my mom, dad and grandma (some of those cheers may have been just in my head) it was time for the Major to retire for the night. Tomorrow it’s my dad’s turn to take him for a spin.
