Say you are travelling abroad, or even just across the border to our neighbours to the south and take your cell phone with you. As soon as you reach the border or its vicinity and connect to another provider’s network you will receive a friendly reminder from your provider that you are now roaming. Oh and it now costs $1.45 per text message sent/received, your first born for every minute spent talking and if your smartphone transfers any data (i.e. checks email or you use the GPS), you might as well take out another mortgage on your house.

Luckily, there is a way to take your iPhone to another country and avoid the exorbitant costs. The only catch is, you can only use it where there is Wi-Fi, so no texts, no phone calls (except maybe through VoIP). To do this first switch the phone into airplane mode.

Airplane Mode On

Then, turn Wi-Fi back on.

Wireless On

Done. The phone will not connect to a cell network but you can still use it like you would an iPod touch. Head in to anywhere there is Wi-Fi and connect to the network.

Those of you that are rocking Android or Windows phones, would you be able to do this on your phone, and if so, how?

[Thanks to my co-worker ZK for showing me this neat little trick]
